I bought this remote mainly because the remote for my old Samsung VCR is not working as well as it once did. I hardly use it so it was not really urgent, but it has been on my mind for a long time. I saw the Harmony 300i and bought it on impulse. I left it sitting somewhere for a couple of weeks before trying to set it up.
Setup was easy, but left me feeling a little disappointed since not all the buttons worked the same as on the Samsung remote and my specific model of set top box was not in their database. Two devices out of three not working seemed too many. I spent some time writing a looooooong message on the support page. Then I saw a reference to the 1800 number and called it.
All my problems were solved very quickly and I got some education. It turns out that the thing can actually record signals from other remotes. A couple of missing features were added very quickly to the VCR and STB settings. The software was quite easy to use and worked well so I set up the buttons on the 300i to match the Samsung remote. Simple.
I left a few stars for improvements, but I can't think of any. I did not research universal remotes before this purchase so I can't compare it to anything else.
One thing I like about it is that you can point it almost anywhere in the room and it works. It is good that I don't need to aim it at the TV.
I had preconceived ideas about the capabilities of the device and also probably efficacy of logitech support at 10pm on a Tuesday night. I underestimated both. Both were much better than I expected.

Decent value but clumsy.

The value in a universal remote is being able to set it up for my parents once and not have them call every time they need to watch a DVD. They wore the buttons off their 525 so I bought a 300 for them. I tested th 300 on both my HT setup and my parents, which are very different.
The 300 is not what i was expecting. The setup was very simple, but it soon became apparent that this was only because the functionality was too. The watch TV command button and the online setup (which is very good) are about the only features that sets this apart from a standard no-name universal remote.
Say you set the "watch tv" button up to watch cable, that's fine. Howeverm, if you want to watch a DVD, and doing so requires you to change an input on the AVR, then you need to manually select whatever button you have the AVR mapped to, then select the input for your dvd player manually as well, before changing back to the dvd mapping to control the dvd player.
With HDMI control you could fool the remote into thinking it only needs to control one device so long as all your devices will talk to each other through the TV or reciever. Unfortunately we all own that one device that doesn't.
It feels good enough in your hand, the buttons are tactile, and it isn't the flimsy and bendy build quality of the 525. That said it isn't as solid as my standard onkyo or sony remotes.
I'd reccomend it to a friend who lost a remote, but you'll need to spend more to get the macro functionalities that make harmoney remotes worthwhile.
